Understanding the Korea-Canada Pension Framework
Canadian citizens working in South Korea are fully eligible for the NPS Lump-Sum Refund upon leaving Korea. Canada and South Korea have maintained a strong social security reciprocity treaty since 1999, ensuring full refund rights or credit totalization toward CPP.
The Reciprocity Principle of Article 77
The National Pension Act of South Korea (Article 77 and Article 126) mandates that foreign citizens receive identical pension treatment to that which Korean citizens receive in the foreign worker's home nation. Because the Canada and South Korea entered into a Bilateral Social Security Totalization Agreement in 1999, administrative procedures are strictly governed by these statutory bilateral articles.
