Guide to National Pension Refund for Foreigners (2026)

When it's time to leave South Korea, don't leave your money behind. The National Pension (국민연금) contribution is often a significant sum that expats can reclaim in a single lump-sum payment (반환일시금) upon departure.

1. Who Can Claim the Lump-sum Refund?

Eligibility for a National Pension refund depends strictly on your nationality and the type of visa you held while working in Korea.

  • Social Security Agreement Countries: Citizens of countries like the USA, Canada, Germany, Switzerland, Netherlands, and India are generally eligible for refunds.
  • Reciprocity Countries: Some countries are eligible based on the principle of reciprocity (e.g., Philippines, Thailand).
  • E-9, E-8, H-2 Visa Holders: Citizens of specific countries (e.g., Uzbekistan, Indonesia) are eligible regardless of reciprocity due to special labor laws.

Are Chinese citizens eligible? Yes, Chinese nationals (excluding F-5) are eligible as of 2026 based on the social security agreement.

2. How Much Will You Receive?

The calculation is straightforward but lucrative. Every month, 9% of your gross salary was contributed to the pension fund (4.5% deducted from your pay, 4.5% matched by your employer).

Estimated Payout Formula

Lump-sum Refund = (Total Salary Received × 9%) + Interest

3. Application Procedure

You should apply for the refund within one month of your scheduled departure date. You can do this at any National Pension Service (NPS) office in Korea or at the NPS branch at Incheon Airport on your day of departure.

  • Required Documents: Application form, Passport, Alien Registration Card (ARC), and a copy of your bank book (Korean or Overseas bank).
  • Flight Ticket: You must provide a copy of your confirmed one-way flight ticket out of Korea.
  • Processing Time: If applying at the office, it usually takes 1-2 weeks. If applying at the airport, you can get it as an airport payment (KRW cash) or sent to your overseas account.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get the refund if I have an F-5 or F-6 visa?

Generally, No. Permanent residents (F-5) and marriage migrants (F-6) are treated like Korean citizens regarding pension rules and are typically not eligible for lump-sum refunds unless they forfeit their visa and leave permanently.

What happens to my pension if I come back to Korea?

If you received a refund and later return to work in Korea, your pension history starts from zero. However, you can 're-pay' the refund (with interest) to restore your previous years of service, which is useful if you plan to stay long-term for a Korean pension.

Is there a deadline to apply?

Yes, the statute of limitations is 5 years. You must claim your refund within 5 years of your departure. After 5 years, the right to the refund expires and the money is absorbed into the national fund.
