Guide to Korean Public Transportation: T-Money, KTX and More

Korea Has One of the Best Transit Systems on Earth

South Korea is public transportation network is fast, clean, affordable, and absurdly punctual. The Seoul Metro alone carries over 7 million passengers daily across 23 lines and 700+ stations. Add the KTX high-speed rail, an extensive intercity bus network, and city buses that run every few minutes, and you can reach virtually anywhere in the country without ever needing a car.

T-Money: Your One Card for Everything

What Is T-Money?

T-Money (티머니) is a rechargeable transit card that works on subways, buses, taxis, and even convenience stores across the entire country. It is the single most essential item for daily life in Korea after your phone.

Where to Get One

Available at any convenience store (CU, GS25, 7-Eleven) or subway station vending machine. The card itself costs ₩2,500. You charge it at convenience stores, subway machines, or through the T-Money app.

Pro Tips

  • T-Money gives a ₩100 discount per ride compared to cash payment
  • Free transfers between subway and bus within 30 minutes
  • If you have a Samsung phone, you can use a mobile T-Money through Samsung Pay
  • Apple Pay does not support T-Money yet, but the app-linked card works

The Seoul Metro

Basics

The Seoul subway system is color-coded and numbered, making it remarkably foreigner-friendly. Every station has signs in Korean, English, Chinese, and Japanese. Announcements are made in all four languages on major lines.

Base fare is ₩1,400 (~$1.07) with T-Money. Trains run from approximately 5:30 AM to midnight, with extended hours on Friday and Saturday nights on select lines.

Navigation Tips

  • Use Naver Map or KakaoMap for real-time arrival info and transfer guidance
  • Transfer stations are huge — some transfers at stations like Express Bus Terminal or Sindorim involve 10+ minutes of walking
  • Rush hours (8-9 AM, 6-7 PM) on Lines 2 and 9 are intensely crowded. Consider shifting your commute by 30 minutes
  • Women-only cars are available during rush hours on some lines (marked in pink)

KTX High-Speed Rail

The KTX connects Seoul to major cities at speeds up to 305 km/h. It is Korea is equivalent of Japan is Shinkansen.

Key Routes and Travel Times

  • Seoul → Busan: 2 hours 30 minutes (vs 4+ hours by car)
  • Seoul → Daejeon: 50 minutes
  • Seoul → Gwangju: 1 hour 40 minutes
  • Seoul → Gangneung: 1 hour 50 minutes (opened for 2018 Olympics)

Booking Tips

  • Book through the Korail app (has English mode) or at station kiosk machines
  • Early bird discounts of 10-30% are available if you book weeks in advance
  • Standing tickets (입석) are cheaper but limited — fine for short trips
  • The KTX departs from Seoul Station or Yongsan Station depending on the line

Intercity and Express Buses

For destinations not served by KTX, Korea is express and intercity bus network fills every gap. Buses are modern, comfortable (many have USB charging), and remarkably punctual.

Types of Buses

  • 고속버스 (Express Bus): Direct routes between major cities, no stops
  • 시외버스 (Intercity Bus): May make stops in smaller towns along the way
  • 우등 (Premium): 3-seat rows (wider seats) vs standard 4-seat rows — worth the small premium for trips over 2 hours

Booking

Use the Txbus app or buy tickets at the bus terminal. Seoul has three main bus terminals: Express Bus Terminal (Gangnam), Dong Seoul Terminal (Gangbyeon), and Nambu Terminal — each serving different regions. Check which terminal serves your destination before heading out.

City Buses

Seoul is color-coded bus system is logical once you understand it:

  • Blue (간선): Long-distance routes across the city
  • Green (지선): Short neighborhood connector routes
  • Red (광역): Express routes to/from suburbs and satellite cities
  • Yellow (순환): Circular routes within the downtown core

Tap your T-Money when boarding AND when exiting (exit tap is required for transfer discounts).
