Cost of Living in Seoul: A Realistic Breakdown for 2026

Cost of Living in Seoul: A Realistic Breakdown for 2026

The Real Numbers, Not the Blog Estimates

Most cost-of-living articles about Seoul either wildly overestimate (comparing it to Tokyo or Singapore) or underestimate (ignoring the reality that foreigner lifestyles are different from local Korean lifestyles). This is a realistic, category-by-category breakdown based on actual spending patterns of English-speaking expats living in Seoul in 2026.

Housing: The Biggest Variable

Monthly Rent (Wolse) by Area

  • Hongdae/Mapo area (studio/officetel): ₩600,000-900,000 + ₩5-10M deposit
  • Gangnam (studio): ₩800,000-1,200,000 + ₩10-20M deposit
  • Yeonnam-dong/Mangwon: ₩700,000-1,000,000 + ₩5-10M deposit
  • Suburban areas (Gwanak, Geumcheon): ₩400,000-600,000 + ₩3-5M deposit

관리비 (maintenance fee) adds ₩50,000-150,000/month for building maintenance, water, and common area electricity. Always ask about this before signing a lease.

Food: Surprisingly Affordable

Eating Out

Korea is one of the few developed countries where eating out can be cheaper than cooking. A satisfying lunch at a Korean restaurant (백반집 — set meal restaurant) costs ₩7,000-9,000. Kimbap at a chain like Kimbap Cheonguk runs ₩4,000-5,000. Even a generous Korean BBQ dinner for two rarely exceeds ₩40,000.

Monthly Food Budget

  • Budget-conscious: ₩400,000-500,000 (eating at local Korean restaurants, some cooking)
  • Moderate: ₩600,000-800,000 (mix of Korean, Western, occasional delivery)
  • Comfortable: ₩1,000,000+ (regular Western restaurants, imported groceries, frequent delivery)

Coffee culture adds up fast. A cafe americano averages ₩4,500-5,500. If you drink one daily, that is ₩135,000-165,000/month just on coffee.

Transportation

  • Subway/bus commute: ₩60,000-80,000/month
  • Occasional taxi use: Add ₩50,000-100,000/month
  • KTX to Busan (round trip): ~₩120,000

Car ownership is expensive and unnecessary in Seoul. Parking alone can cost ₩100,000-200,000/month.

Healthcare

NHIS premium (employee share): ~₩100,000-150,000/month depending on salary. Co-pays for doctor visits are ₩5,000-15,000. Prescriptions rarely exceed ₩10,000. Budget about ₩150,000-200,000/month total.

Phone and Internet

  • Mobile plan: ₩40,000-65,000/month
  • Home internet: Usually included in 관리비 or ₩20,000-30,000/month separately

Entertainment and Lifestyle

  • Gym membership: ₩50,000-80,000/month (local gyms) or ₩150,000+ (international chains)
  • Movie ticket: ₩12,000-15,000
  • Noraebang (karaoke): ₩15,000-20,000/hour per room
  • Soju (bar): ₩5,000/bottle, draft beer ₩5,000-8,000
  • Night out (Hongdae/Itaewon): ₩50,000-100,000 depending on habits

Total Monthly Budget Estimates

  • Survival mode: ₩1,200,000-1,500,000 (~$920-$1,150) — shared housing, eating local, minimal entertainment
  • Comfortable single: ₩2,000,000-2,500,000 (~$1,530-$1,920) — studio apartment, eating out regularly, active social life
  • Comfortable couple: ₩3,000,000-4,000,000 (~$2,300-$3,070) — 1-bedroom, mix of cooking and dining, weekend activities

These estimates assume you already have your Wolse deposit handled. The deposit is the biggest financial hurdle for newcomers but is returned when you leave, so it is not a monthly expense by itself.
